When you are showing all formatting, you'll see dots between words (for spaces), the pilcrow mark at the end of paragraphs, a 'left turn' arrow for line breaks, and arrows for tabs.Word for Mac: invisible codes. If the paragraph that is formatted with extra space before it falls at the top of a page, Word will sometimes remove the extra space and sometimes it won't.When paragraph marks are turned on spaces, tabs, and line breaks are shown as dots or arrows. I have nothing like that on this version.When you define the formatting for a paragraph (such as a heading), you can instruct Word to add additional space before the paragraph. In previous versions of Word, I think there was somewhere in the visible tool bar an image of that actual 'backwards P' paragraph symbol that one could uncheck to hide. I have a 2008 MS Word for Mac and for some reason I do not understand, suddenly I have those weird paragraph marks appearing on every line.

The only way I have been able to make the paragraph spacing take effect without fail every time is to use a Next Page Section Break. However, I have not found this true in my experience.
